A JOYFUL PRIMARY SUITE

Designing a joyful primary suite requires a personalised approach that resonates with and reflects those who will be utilising the space.  The starting point always focuses on the client – their personality, sleeping patterns, home/work/family balance and their lifestyle. Creating a private space that brings them joy is firmly front of mind . There is a foundation of key features for creating the most perfect sanctuary possible in terms of how it works within the home, and for the home owner. Ultimately a primary suite should be a harmonious blend of form and functionality that engenders a sense of repose, relaxation and rejuvenation.

FIVE FUNDAMENTALS

1. Considered space planning is the foundation of any successful room design. The layout should maximise functionality and create a seamless flow within the space.

2. Soothing, sludgy tones or a bright white coastal palette work well for establishing a sense of tranquillity and stylish serenity.

3. Functional furniture that is fit for purpose is important – an ottoman at the foot of the bed, a comfy armchair and a console.

4. Consider soundproofing, adequate insulation, and heating and cooling to maintain an ambient temperature to ensure a sound night’s sleep. 5. Incorporate personal elements that reflect your taste and lifestyle. Personalisation contributes to a sense of ownership and comfort. Infuse the space with personal touches and meaningful items that bring joy – sentimental artwork, family photos, or cherished mementos will not only add character, they will create a connection between the space and your own sense of joy.

 2

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BED

When you consider we spend at least a third of our day in bed, the importance of a quality mattress can’t be underestimated.  Consistently getting good sleep on a comfortable mattress is a long-term investment in emotional well-being. Over time, the positive impact on mood, stress levels, and overall health can contribute to a more fulfilling, balanced and joyful life.  And good quality pillows are vital for a restful night’s sleep. In terms of design, the bed is the focal point of the bedroom. Invest in good quality furniture, high thread count sheets and a quilt cover set that marries with the aesthetic of the room. Decorator cushions, throws and layered rugs enhance the overall comfort.

3

LET THERE BE LIGHT

When designing a primary suite, think about natural light, task lighting and ambient lighting. Large windows allow an abundance of natural light to fill the room during the day, or you can incorporate natural light through well-placed windows or skylights.  Wall sconces or table lamps set on bedside tables are ideal for night-time reading and for adding a soft and soothing glow, and task lighting ensures a light and bright atmosphere.  Integrate a variety of lighting sources to cater to different moods and activities, and consider adjustable fixtures and dimmer switches to customise the lighting based on the time of day and desired ambiance.

4

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING

Custom-designed walk-in-robes and multifunctional furniture help optimise storage in a primary suite.  Foster a sense of calm with efficient morning routines – designated spaces for clothing, accessories, and personal items streamline the process of getting ready for the day. A clutter-free environment is visually appealing and contributes to a more peaceful and joyful atmosphere that promotes a sense of calm and relaxation. When everything has its designated place there is a sense of harmony and balance that helps to reduce stress levels, fostering a  feeling of control and order that positively impacts mental well-being. Well-planned storage solutions make any room feel more spacious, functional and serene. When the bedroom is a tranquil and relaxing space, it becomes a more joyful and effective retreat.

THE WISHLIST

There are some key elements that turn a beautiful primary suite into an extraordinary space that also add value to a home. When space and budget allow, a primary suite wouldn’t be complete without an ensuite bathroom that seamlessly integrates with the bedroom, promoting a cohesive and inviting ambiance whilst allowing for privacy. Consider integrating smart home technology to enhance convenience and functionality. Smart lighting, electric blinds and temperature control contribute to a more comfortable and efficient primary suite. And nothing engenders an inviting atmosphere like an open fireplace. The gentle flicker and dancing flames of an open fire create a sense of intimacy, and the warmth and soft glow enhance any space. A fireplace in a bedroom serves as a focal point, adding visual interest and character to the bedroom. The crackling sound of the burning wood, combined with the radiant heat, provides a comforting and soothing experience, making the bedroom an ideal place for relaxation and unwinding.

THE LAST WORD…

More inclusive and egalitarian, the term ‘primary suite’ replaces the outdated ‘master suite’ to promote a more considered approach to design language that is aligned with evolving societal values. It acknowledges and emphasises the idea that the space is the primary, central sleeping and resting area for the occupants, without implying a hierarchical relationship. This change aligns with contemporary values of equality and recognises that ‘master’ is no longer relevant in design speak.
