At KWD we love to promote products that are unique, timeless and beautifully crafted. Sid Dickens Memory Blocks are a stunning example of decorative design devoted to these three qualities.
Lovingly handmade in Canada since 1994, Memory Blocks are the original three dimensional collectible wall plaques. Interactive and ageless, the collection captures pieces of history as tangible, enchanting collectible art for anyone who wants to.
Initially trained as a sculptor, Sid Dickens was quickly distinguished in the early 90s for his groundbreaking and unconventional Memory Blocks. Describing himself as extremely motivated, Sid continues to take inspiration from his travels and constant research around the world. With numerous adoring fans and celebrity collectors like Sir Elton John and Dolce & Gabanna, his name and unique Memory Blocks are recognised worldwide.
Innovative finishes are achieved by his own process of working through experimentation with an unusual combination of materials and techniques. For some of the designs he has literally invented his own glazing formulas – structured to emphasize and challenge specific attributes of plaster and to respond to each piece’s unique architectural volume.
Memory Blocks are produced in limited batches. Once the tile is no longer produced it becomes a retired design and often even more highly sought after. James Buddle of KWD is an expert in sourcing rare and interesting tiles. He has been sourcing Sid Dickens Memory Blocks for many years, and has curated a large collection ready for sale.
The director of KWD, Kate Walker, has a large personal collection of her own Memory Blocks, and continues to collect a new piece every year. Kate says “being a lover of tiles, it is no surprise that I fell in love with the uniqueness and whimsical nature of these beautiful tiles. No longer do tiles just need to be a hard finish solution, rather, these are works of art. I love changing their order very year to create a different story, a different palette. I have many retired blocks, and can’t wait for new releases every year.”
These incredible Memory Blocks can be purchased through KWD. They make a wonderful gift for friends and family. Why. It surprise a loved one with a Sid Dickens Memory Block under the tree this Christmas. Prices start at approximately $160 and can go up to $1000 depending on the design and rarity of the tile.
