Application: Honed, laid stretcherbond (brickbond)
Basalt is a dark, dense, igneous rock of a lava flow or minor intrusion, composed essentially of labradorite and pyroxene and often displaying a columnar structure.
Basalt’s stunning greyish appearance and durability makes it the perfect material for many design applications, including:
Bathroom Tiling
Internal Floor tiling
External Paving
Pool Coping
Wall Cladding
Dry Wall Cladding
Benchtops
Basalt, like most natural stones, is porous, therefore needs to be treated correctly prior to, and after installation, to ensure it remains stain-resistant. The DUPONT range of sealers are highly recommended for sealing basalt. Consideration needs to be given to its uses near salt-water pools also. It also requires an appropriate rapid-set adhesive (like Grani-rapid), to avoid the glue bleeding through the material.
As a natural stone, one of the most beautiful features of this material is the variation from piece to piece. It has a stunning patina on the surface, and feels like silk underfoot, particularly in the honed finish. Other finishes available are sawn, bush-hammered, flamed, raw, chiselled and polished.
Being a natural stone, Basalt can be cut to any size and thickness. Commonly imported in slabs of approximately 2400x1400x20mm, and tiles of 1000x500x20mm, 800x400x15mm, 600x300x10mm. Specialised sizes and thicknesses for pool copings can also be imported on request in addition to crazy paving.
