“Diane Bergeron is a creator. She loves colour and texture, and she’s a real go-getter – designing her own fabric range in Australia which is so rare. I love that Diane’s designs take the guesswork out of mixing and matching. Anyone who loves her colours and patterns can understand her approach which is coordinated, considered and curated.” Kate Walker

KWD: What was the journey that led you to start your own brand?
DB: Upon arriving in Australia 20 years ago, I noticed a stark contrast in the interior design scene—either heavily traditional Victorian or ultra-modern, with no middle ground. After relocating from New York to Melbourne, I began importing distinctive items and fabrics from the US for designers and new clients. This venture led to the creation of my brand and a significant collaboration with Arthur G.
KWD: When did you first discover your love of design, and who were some of your earliest influences?
DB: I discovered my love for design at a very young age, starting with decorating at home. From rearranging furniture to experimenting with colours and patterns, I found immense joy in transforming spaces. Like many designers, I began with my own room, using it as a canvas to express my creativity and develop my style.
Some of my earliest influences were iconic figures in the design world. Bunny Williams’ elegant and timeless interiors, Parish Hadley’s innovative and collaborative approach, Dorothy Draper’s bold use of colour and pattern, and Farlow Gatewood’s unique ability to blend traditional and contemporary elements all shaped my design sensibilities. Their work inspired me to pursue a career in design and continues to influence my aesthetic choices today.

KWD: What is the most rewarding part of what you do?
DB: The most rewarding part of my work is knowing that my designs contribute to creating beautiful, inviting interiors around the world. Each piece I design has the potential to transform a space and bring joy to those who live in it. I take great satisfaction in seeing how my creations become integral parts of people’s homes, enhancing their daily lives and bringing a sense of comfort and happiness. It’s incredibly fulfilling to receive feedback from clients who express how much they love the atmosphere and aesthetics that our designs have brought into their lives.
KWD: Do you intend to keep focused on your current business model or would you like to expand and diversify?
DB: We plan to expand and diversify while evolving our business model. The main focus will be our collaborations, designing new wallpaper, fabric, furniture, and lighting collections. One of our latest endeavours with The Modern Traditionalists, with whom we currently have a lighting range, includes a collection of coffee tables, side tables, and mirrors.
KWD: How did the collaboration with Arthur G evolve?
DB: About twelve years ago, I discovered Arthur G and was impressed by the quality of the locally handmade furniture. We discussed adding a collection of classic modern American furniture to their range, which I would design. The look was not widely used in Australia at the time, but I am thrilled to say that last year, we celebrated our 10-year anniversary, and the style has been well embraced and now includes over 25 designs.

KWD: Who are your global influences?
DB: I’m influenced by iconic designers such as Bunny Williams, Charlotte Moss, Michael S. Smith, Celerie Kemble, Miles Redd, Mark D. Sikes, and Paloma Contreras.
KWD: What was it about the My Happy Space Movement that resonated with you?
DB: We have always supported children in need when possible. Years ago we worked on providing a safe environment for children affected by parents with drug problems. Mirabel House is something that I am very proud of, many people in our industry helped make it happen. So when you reached out we were thrilled to be a part of this heartfelt philanthropic venture.
